Hamden Youth Lacrosse

Girls Program

Grades PK – 8

Directors: Mike Brown, Katie Keough, Alyssa Murphy

Grades K and 1 - Bantam (Clinic format)

This seven week clinic will focus on developing lacrosse skills for young players.  Station-based, age-appropriate drills will focus on scooping, catching, passing, shooting, and athletic movement.  The clinic will take place on either Saturday or Sunday mornings during April and May.  There will likely be a game against a similar program to cap off the season.

Grades 2, 3, and 4 - Lightning (Travel)

Grades 5 and 6 - Junior (Travel)

Grades 7 and 8 - Senior (Travel)

Travel teams will practice 1-2 times per week and have 1-2 games on the weekends.  There will be one tournament or jamboree scheduled for each team.

Equipment Needs:

Lacrosse stick:  Each girl must have her own lacrosse stick.  We recommend choosing a stick with an "offset head", which allows for a deeper pocket.  However, try not to skimp on price, because the quality of stick will make a huge difference in a girls' ability to catch, throw, and cradle.  We do not want a girl to become frustrated because of a poor stick.

Eye Protection:  USLacrosse requires that each girl wear approved eye protection.  Although there are several models of eye protection available, we recommend one with a "cage" design rather than a plastic lens.  It must be approved by USLacrosse: see the list of approved goggles at:

Mouth guard:  Each girl must also have a mouth guard.  There are several kinds available.

The above are the only equipment needs.  We recommend rubber cleats (i.e. soccer cleats) for footwear, but they are not mandatory.  It is also advisable that each girl have a water bottle and be dressed appropriately based on weather conditions.

Although goalies require additional protective gear, and a different stick, each team will have its own goalie equipment for those interested in trying the position.
