Equipment needs:

bullet Lacrosse stick:  Each girl must have her own lacrosse stick.  We recommend choosing a stick with an "offset head", which allows for a deeper pocket.  However, try not to skimp on price, because the quality of stick will make a huge difference in a girls' ability to catch, throw, and cradle.  We do not want a girl to become frustrated because of a poor stick.

bullet Eye Protection:  USLacrosse requires that each girl wear approved eye protection.  Although there are several models of eye protection available, we recommend one with a "cage" design rather than a plastic lens.  It must be approved by USLacrosse: see the list of approved goggles at:
www.uslacrosse.org/news/2004/eyewearupdate.phtml

bullet Mouth guard:  Each girl must also have a mouth guard.  There are several kinds available, but they are all inexpensive ($2-$4), so it would not hurt to have a spare in case one gets lost.

The above are the only equipment needs.  We recommend rubber cleats (i.e. soccer cleats) for footwear, but they are not mandatory.  It is also advisable that each girl have a water bottle and be dressed appropriately based on weather conditions.

Although goalies require additional protective gear, and a different stick, each team will have its own goalie equipment for those interested in trying the position.

The Game

In a girls' lacrosse game there are 12 players on each team -- 11 field players plus a goalie.  The 11 field players are broken down into 3 defensemen (point, coverpoint, and third man), 5 midfielders (left and right attack wings, left and right defense wings, and center), and 3 attackmen (first , second , and third home).

The game is played on a field whose goals are 100 yards apart, with an additional 10 yards behind each goal. The field is 70 yards wide Oddly enough, there are no out-of-bounds markers -- the referee uses his/her own discretion to decide when a ball is out of play..

At the Bantam level, and sometimes at the junior level, smaller games are often played -- say 7 players on a team -- and on smaller fields.
